Google Wave: Export Multiple Wave!

Coleman, (Google Wave Team) says

We recently made it possible to export a single wave as a Zip file. Now, you can now also select up to 10 waves in your search panel and download them all together as a set of PDFs.

We hope this feature proves a useful way of saving the information that you have in waves. For more information on it, please visit the help center article.

In addition, we're working on ways for you to access waves through Google Docs and as we announced back in August, we'll continue to keep wave.google.com running at least through the end of the year.

Happy exporting!

Now you can add Optional attendees in Google Calendar

Time is one of our most precious resources. Despite their necessity, meetings tend to vary in importance for different attendees. John might be really interested in his team's weekly meeting, whereas Jane, who is working on a unrelated project, may want to skip it.

Guests' roles in meetings tend to vary as well. Some people have to be there to lead the meeting or help make decisions, whereas others are gathering information they may be able to digest just as well via the notes. Without knowing which attendees are crucial and which are optional, it can be difficult to know which meetings you really need to attend.

That's where Google Calendar's new "Optional attendees" feature comes in. With a couple clicks, you can openly communicate the importance of a meeting for each attendee. Click on the "Make some attendees optional link" above the guest list and then toggle the role of each attendee by clicking the icon next to his or her name. So far, this feature has helped us more effectively manage our own time on the Calendar team — we hope it does the same for you.

Google's approach to Email. I LUV IT

If you visited the Gmail log-in page recently, you may have noticed that things looked a wee bit different. We decided to give this page a bit of a facelift and updated a few of Gmail's other pages while we were at it. Our goal was to keep a familiar look while freshening up the graphics and trimming down the text (we cut out over 250 words in the process).

Here's a before & after of the log-in page:

We also updated the Gmail logo, brightening the colors and making it more in line with the latest Google logo:

Backup Your Waves

We're dedicated to giving you better access to the information you currently have in Google's Wave servers. We aim to provide multiple ways to let you export and migrate that information, and we have some updates for you in this blog post.

Today, we're announcing a feature that lets you download your Google Wave content as a Zip file. Within any wave, you can now select "Export" which will let you save your current view of the wave, plus any attachments that have been added along the way. We hope this feature proves a useful way of sharing the information that you have in waves. For more information on it, please visit this help center article.

This feature is useful if you have a few waves that you want to export. We are aiming to have a export method for those that have a lot of waves, and will let you know when that's available.

As we announced back in August, we'll continue to keep wave.google.com running at least through the end of the year. In addition, we're working on ways for you to access waves through Google Docs and we hope to share more on our progress soon.

Lastly, if you are interested in developing on the Wave codebase or running your own Wave server to host your waves, check out our developer blog post about the Wave in a Box project.

The power of Google Instant, now in your pocket

Steve Kanefsky, (Software Engineer) Say's

Google Instant makes search faster by displaying not just predictions but actual search results as you type. This saves valuable time on a desktop browser, but wouldn’t it be great to have Google Instant on mobile devices, where each keystroke and page load is much slower and you frequently have just a moment to find the information you need?

In September we announced that we were working to bring Google Instant to mobile, and today we’re making a beta version available to most iPhone and Android devices in the U.S. To try it out, go to google.com in your phone’s browser and tap the Google Instant “Turn on” link beneath the search box (if you don’t see the “Turn on” link, try waiting a moment and then refresh the page).

Like the desktop version of Google Instant, when you type on your mobile device you’ll see predictions of what you might be searching for. If you type [anse], for example, you should see [ansel adams] along with other predictions. Results for the first prediction appear automatically, and tapping on the other predictions will display those results. Pressing the enter key or the search button skips the predictions and will display results for exactly what you’ve typed. Check out our demo video:

With Google Instant on mobile, we’re pushing the limits of mobile browsers and wireless networks. You will probably notice a big improvement in speed when you search thanks to a new AJAX and HTML5 implementation for mobile that dynamically updates the page with new results and eliminates the need to load a new page for each query.

Google Instant for mobile works best on 3G and WiFi networks, but since the quality of any wireless connection can fluctuate, we’ve made it easy to enable or disable Google Instant without ever leaving the page. Just tap the “Turn on” or “Turn off” link.

We hope you’ll enjoy using Google Instant for mobile as much as we enjoyed making it. It’s currently available for Android 2.2 (“Froyo”) devices and iPhones and iPods running iOS 4 in the U.S. in English. We’re working to support additional countries and languages and more devices in the coming months, so stay tuned.

Notes for Google TV Giveaway!

Amanda Surya, (Google TV Developer Relations Team) Says

Last week we announced that we'd be giving out 10,000 Google TV devices over the course of the next several weeks. As part of those efforts, today we sent an email to thousands of U.S.-based web developers in the Google Code community to offer them a free device. This program, combined with last week's Adobe MAX Conference giveaway and our Google TV Giveaway Contest for Web Developers, is going to allow us to realize our goal of getting these devices into the hands of web developers so they can start building optimized websites for TV.

We're also excited to share that our Google TV Giveaway for Web Developers had an overwhelming number of entires prior to last night's contest expiration and we'll be reaching out to notify winners soon.

Thanks for your continued interest and support of Google TV.

Four New Themes! i love it!

Manu: Hey, how would you fancy some new Gmail themes?
Jake: Sure, I would love that! How usable are they?
Manu: Huh, usable? Well, there's a flishy-flashy theme that blinks every...
Jake: What? I don't want things to flash, I want to read my email.
Manu: No? Well then, what about this fluorescent pink theme that will make your screen look very special when your friends are looking at...
Jake: No pink please!
Manu: Oh. Then maybe this hyper dynamic and playful theme that makes all links on the page jump away each time you try to click on...
Jake: Are you insane? Please, just give me something usable. If I want flashy game-like graphics, I can use High Score. If I want something dapper for my friends to look at, I can use Shiny. If I want cartoon characters hanging out here and there in my Gmail, I can use Zoozimps. I just want something dead simple.
Manu: What about stripping the Gmail interface to the bare bones, like these two new themes, Basic Black and Basic White?

Jake: That's better. The dark one may be good for my eyes.
Manu: Great! Do you have an Android phone?
Jake: Yes.
Manu: Then you may like this Android theme too. How about that?

Jake: Nice! Some graphics but still subtle. Give me more.
Manu: Relaxing tree tops? This one ain't blinking.

Jake: Not bad! What about something that would feel more handmade?
Manu: You're in luck, sir. I have this cool Marker theme in store for you. Very unprofessional.

Jake: Nice — I'm gonna stick with this one for now.
Manu: Good choice! See you next time for some more.

Its Halloween from orkut!

Natália Gerassi, (orkut operations team) say's

Boo! We've been getting some strange reports recently. Bat sightings, ghosts appearing out of thin air, wolves howling in the night. Oh, and don't even get us started on the number of zombies that have been seen lurching around. Even the orkut logo seems to have gone through a transformation:

Without a doubt, there's something spooky in the air on orkut. Before you get scared, remember that today is Halloween, one of the funniest holidays in the U.S. calendar and many other countries around the world. Millions of people, both children and adults, dress up in their best costumes (the scarier the better), decorate their houses and head outside for some trick-or-treating or a plain old-fashioned costume party.

To join the fun, you don't even need to come up with a costume. Just decorate your orkut profile with a theme or background color. Black and orange are the official Halloween colors in case you're looking for some inspiration.

And here's another tip: You can also create a new cool scary profile picture using Picnik, Google's free online photo editor.

Hope you all have a hair-raising holiday!

New Interface for Feedburner!

Do you hate delays? Do you think being told to "Please wait..." by websites, cash machines, call centers, and the doughnut stand drive-thru guy in the year 2010 is a sure sign modern living isn't quite meeting our collective expectations as a planet?

Good news! Today, we will be rolling out a new, experimental interface for Google FeedBurner. The real story is what's new under the hood, however: the new interface provides real time stats for clicks, views, and podcast downloads, which means you can start seeing what content is drawing traffic from feed readers, Twitter, and other syndicated sources as it happens.

Additionally, if you use the FeedBurner Socialize service, and your platform uses PubSubHubbub or you ping us when you post, you can for the first time get stats on how much traffic your feed items are receiving from Twitter, as well as feed reading platforms like Google Reader in one place. Again, all within seconds of posting your content. Ping? Pong! Yep. That fast.

Your subscriber and reach numbers are still calculated based on a whole day's worth of requests, and are based on the traffic you received yesterday and before; but your item stats reflect the traffic you are receiving right now.

You can access the new interface by visiting http://feedburner.google.com/gfb/ or logging into feedburner.google.com and then clicking on the "Try out the NEW (beta) version!" link at the top.

The best way to see these real time features is to publish a new post and then switch to the "Last two hours" view to begin seeing updates.

To access feed management or previous analytics functionality, you can continue using the original interface at feedburner.google.com.

In the new interface, we are focusing on two things: our new real-time stats presentation and getting messages about and issues with your feed posted to the top-level dashboard, so that you can better diagnose any issues that may prevent your feed from being delivered in real time. If you have any comments or questions, look for the "Send Feedback" link at the top of the page to tell us what you think.
