Below is a rating list of all teams that competed in the 2009 Google Online Marketing Challenge.
To come to these ratings, Google followed a rigorous judging process. Firstly, we used a proprietary algorithm that examined over 30 different variables within an AdWords account to determine the top 50 teams in each of our three regions (The Americas, EMEA and APAC).
Expert Googlers then reviewed these 150 accounts to determine the top 5 in each of the three regions. The Global Academic Panel then selected winners from these 15 teams based solely on the quality of a team’s written reports. All other ratings below were based on a team's AdWords Campaign Statistics. It's worth noting, that in cases where our Academic Panel members had teams making the final 15, these professors were excluded from judging.
The Campaign Statistics algorithm rated teams across five key areas:
Account Structure - Did the team set up their campaign in an efficient manner? Was it structured against product/service lines and themes? Did it contain Ad Groups with relevant Ad texts/variations and keywords?
Optimization Techniques - Did the team take advantage of tools and methods to get the most out of their campaign? Did the team follow the best practice encouraged in the Challenge guides and support materials?
Account Activity & Reporting - Did the team review and change their approach over time to get the most from campaigns? Was the account regularly monitored and did the team check and react to the reports available?
Performance & Budget - How effectively did the team use the available budget across keywords throughout the competition?
Relevance - How relevant were the team's ads what click-through-rates were achieved?
